The Dometic RTX2000 is a commercial truck air conditioner, but it’s also the perfect solution for those who want to cool their van or camper while they’re away from shorepower. It uses a 12V battery to deliver 6,824 BTUs of cooling energy, but installing it on my Ford Transit van required some extra work because of its different roof cutout size and curvature.
Installation is straightforward and relatively easy, but it’s important to pay attention to the evaporator sealing tape. It’s important to make sure that the tape seals off any air infiltration from the back of the evaporator foam pack, as well as the area directly above it. If you don’t, air will get to the evaporator through the gap and cause damage to the evaporator insulation and tubing.
